David Sedaris – what’s funny about America

In this talk at the Melbourne Writers Festival David Sedaris has some funny anecdotes about cultural differences and expectations – drawn from his experiences as an American living in France and the UK.
I post this to continue the theme of the previous post (The French say Non to Hollywood) on France vs USA rivalry and cultural differences. I especially like Sedaris’s commentary on the the way Americans (himself included) enjoy talking about money and the cost of things (“nice watch? It better be! It cost me four grand”), in contrast to the French, who would find such talk distasteful. He notes that when you visit someone’s house in France, you don’t even comment on a beautiful piece of furniture, let alone ask how much it cost.
